"The new plan: hippy girl was to stand way back, near the edge of the canyon, in the dark, in the rain, being careful not to get too close to the drop off. I would push the clutch in with the other foot on the brakes, letting it roll backwards, wait for enough speed, then pop the clutch with the key on. When I got up to speed, I popped the clutch, the engine belched, coughed and started. I threw it into neutral and slammed on the brakes. The truck skidded backward a few feet (that got my heart going) then stopped. Hippy girl jumped in...real excited...offered a high-five and shouted...WE DID IT...THAT WAS SO COOL! Then after a short pause...'but let that be the most exciting thing that happens on this trip, okay?’ I agreed, but what did I know?”
You Can't Draft Me, I Join: Memoirs of an Insomniac by Tom Kramer

"You Can't Draft Me, I Join" is a memoir and travelog...a true story and adventure.
If you were intrigued by Lieutenant Dangerous, then this should be the next book on your must reads.
Experience with Tom, failure and success, bad luck and good luck, love and heart break…as he intimately engaged with people from around the world. This Vietnam era story is not actually about Vietnam, but rather the other war, the "Cold War,” taking place in the rest of the world, especially Europe.
His story is about duty and its justification within the framework of personal convictions. He was against the war in Vietnam from the beginning and he wasn't the only one. But he was willing and happy to serve his country. He just wanted to finish college first. However, he was nabbed by the Selective Service before he could do so. That, he blames on a certain college professor, although he does get credit for inspiring the book. Without his unfairness, there would be no book.
Yes, plenty of adventure to go around.
Enjoy.
“His last communication went something like this...
"They are boarding the Pueblo, I am now going to destroy this equipment."

He was referring to the highly classified encryption machine that automatically scrambled and descrambled secret texts… preventing it from getting into the hands of the North Koreans.”
